WordPress recently announced that it would be building an open source library of images that can be used for free under a Creative Commons license (what is a CC-0 licence?). Although WordPress has said that it is not officially ready for the public you can check out their photo directory and if you are a WordPress member you can even contribute pictures if you would like.
This is likely coming about because there is a need for CC-0 licensed pictures that can be freely distributed by website theme creators. While there have been a few companies, such as Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay, that got their start by using CC-0 licensed pictures, most of them have enacted licensing restrictions that do not allow the right to compile photos. This restriction is what prevents theme creators from being able to offer stock pictures with their themes.
This is great news for theme creators and other creatives that would like to include a library of stock photos with their creations. If you are someone who would like to use photos for commercial purposes, any of these websites would work well for you. In fact, if you have ever used Google image search to find a picture to use for your business then you would be better served using one of these websites. A large portion of pictures found using Google are copyright protected. It is possible to set a filter to search for pictures on Google that allow them to be used under a portion of the creative commons license but commercial use without modification is one of the hardest categories to find high quality pictures under.
The websites mentioned above allow their pictures to be used for commercial purposes without modification. All of the pictures are high resolution, high quality pictures made for the purpose of commercial use. No more downloading a picture from Google only to find that it is pixelated and grainy when you try to use it for your purposes.
